Kicking off our Artist Features for The Contemporary Print: 5×5 is artist and printmaker Laura R. Post in conversation with Miranda K. Metcalf of pine|copper|lime, the internet’s number one printmaking podcast! In this interview, Post talks about how she came to printmaking through learning moku hanga techniques, the idea that everything is printmaking, silicone casting mishaps, and how sticking with a subject and continually questioning your practice can lead you to communicating the ideas you want to share. In her work, Post rethinks portraiture and expands the definition of printmaking by combining traditional print processes and handmade paper to create multi-faceted sculptures that explore the ways individuals are shaped by their familial network. After receiving her BA from Swarthmore College in Studio Art and Asian Studies, she went on to earn an MFA in Printmaking from the Rhode Island School of Design. She uses her training in Chinese language and East Asian studies to incorporate traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Western printmaking and papermaking techniques and even uses invasive plant species from different ecological regions to create sustainable paper and pulp paintings.

Post is currently on the faculty at University of Texas Arlington and lives in Fort Worth, Texas. Previously she was a Lecturer in the Foundations area at Indiana University, Bloomington. There she spearheaded a grant project to use invasive plants to make paper. In the last year, Post opened three solo exhibitions. Laura Post: About Face–Portraits and Prints since 2009 at Swarthmore College’s List Gallery and Laura Post: Familial Patterns at CR Ettinger Studio Gallery; and Arts Place Indiana. Her work has also been featured in numerous national and international group exhibitions including Shanghai International Paper Art Biennale, Shanghai, China; Umbra: New Prints for a Dark Age selected by Alison Saar at International Print Center New York; twice selected for PaperWest: National Works on Paper Juried Exhibition at the University of Utah to name a few.

Presented in partnership with Big Medium, PrintAustin’s 8th annual international juried exhibition, The Contemporary Print: 5×5, is juried by Delita Martin of Black Box Press Studio. This virtual exhibition showcases five works by five contemporary artists from the United States, Australia, and Slovenia, giving us a broad survey of printmaking happening across the globe. 

This year’s selected artists include Chloe Alexander (Atlanta, Georgia), John Klosterman IV (Tuscaloosa, Alabama), Oliver Pilic (Kamnik, Slovenia), Laura Post (Fort Worth, Texas), and Cleo Wilkinson (Melbourne, Australia).

After five years as director of Davidson Galleries in Seattle, Washington, she spent two years in Sydney, Australia discovering new prints and new printmakers, before relocating to Bangkok, Thailand where she continue to explore the vibrant South East Asian printmaking scene.

Timothy Pauszek, Editor — Timothy Pauszek is a master printer with his MFA from the University of New South Wales in Sydney. He makes every episode of pine|copper|lime sound good, offers the printmaker’s perspective to the creative process, and acts as an in-house graphic designer. (Literally, he’s married to Miranda.)
