This is a photo of my home studio and some of the This is a photo of my home studio and some of the images that inspire my work. It’s my sanctuary. My litho press is named, Diablo. The paint is similar to the kind on lowrider cars. It’s cherry red and sprinkled with red glitter. _I was raised in a strict Catholic family and we were always in church. Although I am considered more of a ‘Cafeteria Catholic’ these days, I like to have religious objects in my studio. Jesus and Mary are constantly watching what I do. I think that all creative people should have a ske I think that all creative people should have a sketchbook. I think of mine as a journal, it’s somewhat personal. Not everything I draw is for an exhibition. Not everything I make should be seen by other people, sometimes they are secrets. Social media can put pressure on artists to be on exhibit all the time, but I ignore it. It’s important to keep your privacy as an artist. _ With so much multitasking going on I think it’s easy to forget great ideas that come to you quickly/randomly. At times I have to stop in the middle of a conversation to write something down or draw something on a napkin. I paste these quick drawings in my sketchbook. Sometimes they help me remember a feeling or a color. _ Sometimes I draw environments around people or things in photos. If I draw a person I usually look at visual references online but I create the person on my own. I may take the shape of someone’s head but give them another person’s eyes and someone else’s hair. In September of 2014, I was fresh out of graduate In September of 2014, I was fresh out of graduate school and deeply missed my former printshop at the University of Arizona. As a printmaker, no access to a print studio was one of the most difficult situations I faced as a post-graduate. _ Hoping to start one at home, I searched for visual resources and found little to none online. Frustrated, I reached out to my print friends and started an FB group titled, “ Show Me Your Print Shop.” It is now on Instagram sitting at over 6,000 followers. _ In this feed you will find innovators, preservers, avid learners and doers. Printmakers who work in small spaces and educators with limited resources. This is Andy Polk, the amazing lithography profess This is Andy Polk, the amazing lithography professor I studied under while I was in the MFA program at the University of Arizona. He is an incredible teacher, brilliant, talented and has a wonderful sense of humor. Andy is also an amazing writer and piano player. _ After spending a short amount of time with him, I quickly realized that he is a genius. He can figure out anything. Andy even created his own language and you’ll often see it written in his work. I was able to visit with him 2 summers ago and he showed me some grease crayons he’s made from several recipes. He couldn’t seem to find the perfect grease crayon that could handle lots of nitric acid so he created his own! _ I have included some of his lithographs but I am barely scratching the surface. He is extremely prolific and an incredible artist. Unfortunately he is not on the ‘gram. Most of these are combination stone and plate lithography. I’ve added a bio below, you can visit his website to see more work. _ Andrew Polk (born 1950) has a BFA from Memphis State University and an MFA. from Indiana University. He taught at the University of Arizona School of Art. Polk’s paintings and works on paper have been exhibited throughout the United States, as well as, in other countries such as Australia, India, New Zealand, Slovakia, China and Bulgaria. As an artist, Polk works in a wide range of media that includes lithography, digital imaging, painting, and drawing. In 2011, I was accepted to the MFA printmaking pro In 2011, I was accepted to the MFA printmaking program at the University of Arizona. I was very excited to study under Andrew Polk, I’ll share some of his work later. (Instagram keeps cutting off my photos so I apologize.) _ My lithographic work evolved, and after reading The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers, I started to think a lot about the body as a vessel. In a way it helped me cope with the loss of someone, of their body. I saw a way that the physical body could continue to live within the earth. I later realized that my religious upbringing (Catholic) contributed a lot to my obsession of the body and death. _ Eventually I left this body of work during graduate school. It was really hard to talk about death and dying in critiques. It was hard to get feedback since it makes people uncomfortable. The first image was my very first lithograph. At t The first image was my very first lithograph. At the time I was working through a lot of childhood memories and traumas related to mourning and dying. For my MA thesis exhibition (Early Mourning) at TAMUCC (2011), I created a playhouse to memorialize my most precious childhood memories. _ A litho stone that was broken during the printing process was framed and sat on the ground as a gravestone for a hummingbird drawing. Throughout various indigenous cultures, hummingbirds are believed to be the strongest animal. They are also seen as messengers that travel between the land of the living and the dead. I see them as angels. _ My lithographs acted as windows on the outer walls of the structure. Since this installation-based work, I’ve realized that my concepts choose my medium. How can I put this mildly, I LOVE DRAWING ON A COL How can I put this mildly, I LOVE DRAWING ON A COLD SLAB OF LIMESTONE!!! Graining is my least favorite part of stone lithography, it can be physically exhausting. I love that there is such a commitment to the stone before you even get to draw on it. Something about this ritual is stressful. It packs on the pressure and forces the artist to make a really good drawing. _ Lithography isn’t for everyone and you’ll know whether you’ll love or hate it right from the start. The graining, drawing and printing is brutal but after it’s done you feel like you’ve been through a battle. I love the fight, it’s my favorite thing in the world. I need to be better about documenting my grease drawings on the actual stone. Hey printmakers. My name is Lisette Chavez (@holy_ Hey printmakers. My name is Lisette Chavez (@holy_press) and I am a multidisciplinary artist living in San Antonio, Texas. _ Exactly 10 years ago, I was introduced to the world of lithography by my former printmaking professor Ryan O’Malley (@ryanomalleyart) at TAMUCC in Corpus Christi, Texas. He is an amazing teacher and friend, I’m grateful to him for believing in me and completely changing my life. _ Ryan had a glass display case right by the front entrance of the printshop. Although there were several incredible prints in his collection, one really caught my attention. I asked him, “who did that?” He said, “That’s Kathryn Polk.” I said, “what is that?” He said, “That’s a lithograph.” Little did I know that this tiny exchange would change the trajectory of the work I made at the time.
