Hopefully you are rested up because this is going to be a big weekend. Three fun shows are happening tonight–one which is a new addition. First up, McCallum Printmaking group show from 6-8, then Ink + Print, which is a PrintAustin Invitational at Link & Pin, and here’s the new addition: A retrospective of Sandra Fernández’s Works on Paper at the Mexican American Cultural Center. Then on Saturday there are several events–workshops, demo at Lion’s Nest, open studio of work by NJ Weaver, Catherine Small, and Jill Alo at Artpost, and two opening receptions in the evening that will both be excellent: Print-Fired (6-9 PM) and New Perspectives in Printmaking (7-9 PM). You can make both of these if you plan your evening, and hopefully fit in dinner somewhere too (there’s a Torchy’s in the same shopping center at Art on 5th…). Both openings will both be worth it so you don’t want to miss. (Please note that the Catherine Small/Cheryl Finfrock exhibit at Pump Project during the day on Saturday has been cancelled.)

My work is a reflection of the many experiences I’ve had as a migrant, immigrant, Latina, mother, and daughter. Like most humans, I have experienced trauma, loss, and
loneliness as well as the intense love of community and family. My art has sought to capture these feelings throughout my life. This retrospective seeks to outline all the different stages that my path as a printmaker has gone throughout the last 22 years.

Learn unique approaches to drawing botanicals, then create color block prints. Learn to transfer design, carve and print your blocks by hand, and create an edition of prints. Beginners welcome!

Workshop: An Introduction to Letterpress Printing: Learn a Slow Craft in a Short Time
In this four hour group workshop, you will learn the old school basics of typesetting, press lock-up, and how to operate a #4 Vandercook proof press. Using the shop’s collection of metal type, you will design and print a limited run of a one color broadside print.

“Changarrito” is an art vending cart, conceptualized by artist Maximo Gonzalez as an alternative to the official gallery selection presented by the Mexican cultural authorities. Faithful to their original, informal spirit, Changarritos exist throughout the world, evolving as forums for the sale of original artwork to the general public and presentation of public programs, special curatorial projects, individual and collective exhibitions. Since 2012, the Mexic-Arte Museum has selected different artists each month to participate in the Changarrito Project. Artists set up their works of art on the Changarrito cart outside the museum. All works of art on the cart are for sale and accessible in prices. One hundred percent of the sales go to the artists and Mexic-Arte purchases one work of art from each artist to accession into their permanent collection. True to the Mexic-Arte’s mission, the Changarrito is dedicated to the presentation and promotion of contemporary Mexican, Latina/o, and Latin American art. Los Printmakers de San Anto Collective is comprised of artists Sabrina Alfaro, Crystal Arias, Kayla Littlefield, Amanda Rangel, and Anthony Runblade, all of whom are students finishing up their Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees at The University of Texas at San Antonio. Drawn together by a common interest in printmaking, these emerging Latina/o often work closely in the studio assisting each other as they experiment with varied printmaking techniques. Their works often explore issues pertaining to identity and feminist theory while incorporating elements of an increasing transnational culture and contemporary use of technology. Additionally, the collective gives back to the San Antonio community by creating art at demonstrations and volunteering at various art events for local organizations. The group was recently featured in the exhibition Print It Up (2014) at R Space, San Antonio, Texas.
