In this hands-on, three steps workshop, participants will: (1) craft their own letterforms by hand, gathering inspiration from typeface-design notions, classic typography, calligraphic techniques and modular systems; (2) the resulting forms will be then transferred to polymer plates through a simple photographic method, to be used for (3) printed reproduction on a Vandercook #4 press. Our process will be learned, yet exploratory: there will be room for trying extravagant ideas, while throwing light into the beauty of traditional printing production, as well as into the close relationship between medium and the resulting artifact. All materials will be supplied by the studio. Participants will leave with printed samples of their work and a collective broadside, along with process sketches and compositions. Limited space available. Saturday, February 3, 10:00am –1:00pm Sunday, February 4, 10:00am – 1:00pm, with open studio available, both days, until 6:00pm. Punchpress studio is located in a separate building behind our central Austin house. We are in the Northfield neighborhood, north of Hyde Park near the North Loop business district.
